What You May Not Know...
I'm going to warn some of you now, you might not like what you have to read and you may not agree with it, but I encourage you to consider this position; especially if you care about our little boy.
Jackson Cooley is on Medicaid and without the Affordable Care Act, he and I wouldn't be where we are today. When Austin got hurt in 2014 we got on Medicaid because we couldn't afford health coverage while he wasn't working... we were able to qualify due to the ACA. When we were in a better place financially we went to go off of Medicaid; however I was already pregnant with Jackson at the time. Because of my pregnancy I was kept on Medicaid which turned out to be a huge blessing. During my pregnancy with Jackson I saw 4 specialists, got over 20 ultrasounds, and lots of blood work and non-stress tests because of my bicornate uterus, Jackson's growth restrictions and his clubfeet. There would have been no way we could have paid for the extreme number of tests I had done to keep me and Jackson healthy and safe through my delivery. Following Jackson's birth he was able to qualify for Medicaid for a year under the Affordable Care Act. He was born with two preexisting conditions: bilateral clubfeet and hypospadia. Before the ACA he may have been denied coverage because of these birth defects (yes they are defects). The ACA allows us to have amazing coverage for Jackson that lets him see some amazing doctors at Children's National and that allows us to have our son seen by specialists when we have concerns even when his doctors don't agree. We have had to pay nothing for Jackson's foot correction or his urology appointments and we won't pay a penny for his surgery. To put this in perspective, Jackson has had 3 pairs of BNB that would have cost us several hundred dollars for each pair and this could continue until he gets out of BNB at age 5! He just qualified for another year of Medicaid which can cover everything that could come in the next year and with our crazy boy anything could happen. We have concerns about the new administration and their plans to repeal the act that allowed for the birth of my son and his health through his first year of life. Politics aside, the repeal of the ACA really makes us nervous will the "new plan" give him the same coverage, will he qualify for medicaid which really affects our life, will he get denied future coverage due to his preexisting conditions? Whether you love Trump or you hate him, remember that his decisions affect the sweet little boy you care about. and the repeal of the ACA without a new plan immediately could really hurt that boy you love. I'm not saying that the ACA is perfect and I'm not saying the Trump administration is going to ruin healthcare for Americans. All I'm saying is we haven't seen a new plan laid out and I have concerns that I think some people don't realize the affect of this act on someone they hold near and dear.
